The Simple Golf Swing

More and more people are discovering that golf is a fantastic way of getting some exercise in fresh air and beautiful surroundings. Formerly the preserve of the rich and elite it is now a sport enjoyed by the masses. Enjoyable as it is though, it can also be the most frustrating game in the world. How can you hit a perfect drive straight down the middle on the eighth only to hook it left into the trees on the ninth? If you are serious about the game and have trouble with the simple golf swing, which is the basis of the sport, your stress level will go through the roof negating all the other benefits ssociated wiith golf.

Position – Get Your setup right

If you want a solid dependable building you need a good foundation. The simple golf swing is exactly the same. The first thing you have to do when building your simple golf swing is to examine your stance. I have sat with a professional before and watched golfers teeing off from the first hole at my local club. He could tell me exactly where the ball was going to go just from the way the person addressed the ball.

First of all address the ball as if you were going to make your swing. Then lay your club down so that the shaft touches the tips of both your left and right shoe. This will show you the direction in which you are actually aiming, and the chances are it won’t actually be at the pin!

If the golf club is not pointing towards the pin or your chosen target then adjust the shaft of the club until it is. Then reposition yourself so that your toes are once again touching the shaft of the club.

The next part of your stance that you need to addresses are your hips and shoulders. These should also be parallel with the shaft of the golf club on the ground. Then keeping this in mind pick up your golf club and take a few practice swings trying to keep your shoulders and hips parallel to that invisible line at the base of your toes.

The Simple Golf Swing

The next stage of the simple golf swing is becoming aware of the actual swing itself. The assistance of a golfing partner may be helpful in this or perhaps you could get someone to video you. This is extremely useful as you very rarely have the swing you think you have and you can’t dispute the evidence when it is caught on camera. These days you can even get special software such as SwingView Pro 6.0 to help you analyze your swing on the computer.

First look at the back swing. The actual start of the back swing should be relaxed and fluid. Take your time – deliberately try not to hit the ball too hard. When you reach the top of the back swing stop for a second. Then, let your downward golf swing flow in the same relaxed way towards the ball. You must remember that speed and force are not the basis of a good simple golf swing.

Also, try to notice whether you keep your wrists straight or is there a bit of movement? Ideally the movement of the wrists should happen just as the golf club is horizontal to the ground.

Contact – Connect With the Ball Properly

The third part of the simple golf swing is when your club makes contact with the golf ball. Remember that you are not playing baseball. The power to drive the golf ball does not come from your arms and shoulders. The whole of your upper body, as well as your legs, should play their part. Also, remember to follow the path of your golf club that was lying at your feet to position your stance. The simple golf swing should stay parallel with this imaginary line.

Don’t Forget The Follow Through
The final element of the simple golf swing is the follow through. It is imperative that when you have made contact with the ball that you continue your swing. When you have finished your entire body should have turned until you are facing your target with your arms high and the club above your head. You be amazed at the number of golfers who don’t do this and wonder why the ball isn’t going where they want it to. And that my friend is the simple golf swing. Good luck!

Golf Head Cover – It Does Serve a Purpose

April 5th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

Golf probably has more equipment and accessories than just about any other sport and a lot of them you can get by without but some. Others, although they may not seem the most important, are actually pretty useful. One of the most important accessories, that is overlooked by a lot of golfers, is the golf head cover.

The golf head cover is not a head cover per se, meaning to say not an item of clothing that covers your head, but rather your club’s head. Some people question the importance of the golf head cover, as it doesn’t seem a vital piece of equipment.

Importance of Head Covers

The main purpose of the golf head cover is to protect your club head from getting damaged both on and off the course.
Damages can occur in a lot of ways; most of it accidently. Accidents can happen when you move around golf course. For example, when the clubs rattle together in the bag, particularly if you have your bag in a cart which is being driven over rough terrain (unless of course you’re always on the fairway!). Or they may getdamaged when transporting them for your golf vacation.

The main reason the golf head cover was invented was to protect the heads, particularly those of the drivers and putters, from getting dents. Dents can affect the club’s performance, which will not help your game at all.
These head covers, came in many varieties and designs from the straightforward to the cute and fluffy. There are many online stores that sell golf head covers, a lot of which are based on famous cartoon and TV characters, animals and famous people. A few to name would be Popeye, Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, Felix the Cat, Smokey the Bear, tigger , Grateful Dead Dancing Bears, and other random floral designs such as a sunflower and a daisy.

An average golf head cover is made from good quality fabrics, and the more expensive ones can be made from strong PVC and leather. Nowadays you can even get ones which are user-activated and can talk – though personally I can’t see that doing your game much good!

In Search of the Best Golf Travel Case

April 5th, 2007    Subscribe To Our Feed

You’re about to meet the in-laws for the very first time and will be spending a few vacation days with them. Your partner has told you what a big golfer your father-in-law is and you’re desperate to make a good impression on the course when he casually suggests you go and play a round together!

This means you should almost certainly have your own set of clubs with you when you take him on, and all the other paraphernalia that goes with them. But what are you going to pack all your new equipment in so that it comes out in the same shape as it went in. Well, not only are there a massive array of clubs available today but there have been new advancements in the golf travel case.

What Are The Options?

A golf travel case will help you make sure your new investment in top of the range equipment remains as pristine as the day you bought it. But before you go running to the store to buy one, you need to familiarize yourself with the options.

There are three types of golf travel case that can be divided into, hard, soft and hybrid designs. Before you say to yourself, “I want the one that will provide the best protection so I’ll just get the hard case,” you might want to compare the differences first. There are pros and cons to all three types, but they have all been specifically designed with travel in mind.

Hard Case

Most hard golf travel case are made of high density polyethylene. These bags are rigid and usually close with locking clasps over a rubber seal to which prevents dirt and moisture from getting to the clubs. The hard golf travel case can be built in different shapes and sizes, to fit your specific length of club and type of bag.

The features to look for in the hard case are through-and-through color (so scratches do not show), maneuverability (such as wheels and handles), and even collapsibility. That’s right collapsibility; “Golf Telebag” has come out with a telescoping rigid case that will collapse to 24″ for storage. So if space is a big concern then this might be the bag for you and will cost you about $120. Standard hard cases will cost anything from $50 -$500. One major drawback to the hard golf travel case though is lack of exterior storage compartments that you get on soft cases.

Soft Case

Alternatively, soft golf travel cases usually come with exterior pockets and extra handles and padding. The most common design for soft cases is a nylon material with support straps and padding to go along with the convenience of extra space they provide when empty. Club Glove boasts that their travel golf bags/covers are the most favored golf travel bags among touring professionals by undisputable margin due to their durability and quality.

If you are looking to be on par with the champions, then one of these bags may be the one for you. Can’t decide between the two? Then maybe it’s a hybrid golf travel case that you require.

Hybrid Case

The design concept is a simple one, make a hard golf travel case with soft case features. The idea has taken a few different forms, but generally either a hard case built into a soft case or a hard case with attachable soft accessory bags for the exterior but there are only so many attachment pockets you can add to a hard case.

The solution to these problems has shown up in Cargo Golf’s “ProSeries 900”. Cargo Golf has taken the idea of the hybrid golf travel bag to the next level with the soft case “skin” which is removable from the hard case travel section of the bag. This design allows for the wear and tear of travel to be handled by the hard case inside, keeping the outer bag with all the accessories bags clean and working as long as possible, and it is reasonably priced.

So there you go - you have looked at the options. Now all you have to do is make a decision, oh and work out how you’re going to beat your father-in-law. But then maybe that’s not such a good idea after all!
